The Only Way to Read Books at the Beach

We’ve all been there. You’ve got your sunglasses, the perfect suit, tanning oil, an amazing beach blanket, a drink with an umbrella, and a book. Ahhh… the perfect setup. You open your book, ready to relax.

But then… sweat starts dripping onto your pages. The sound of seagulls fills the air — first in the distance, then right next to you. You try to read, but your sunglasses make the words impossible to see. You take them off, but the sun’s too bright for your eyes to focus. So, you lay the book across your face and fall asleep.

So much for reading at the beach…

Best Ways to Read While at the Beach

1. Under an umbrella or covering

As much as we love the idea of basking in the sun while reading, if you really want to get some reading done, head for the shade. The coolness of the umbrella will help your eyes, skin, and head. You’ll have access to a cooler with refreshing drinks, the sound of the waves in the background — it’s the perfect spot to read or just relax for a while.

2. In the evening before dusk

If you can’t stand reading under a tent, try reading in the evening. There’s still enough light to read but not so much that you’ll start sweating or squinting. It’s the best time to enjoy both the sun and your book.

3. On a patio overlooking the water

This one’s my favorite! It’s close enough to snacks and drinks, and you can hear the waves, smell the sea salt, and feel the warmth — heavenly. Whether it’s summer or winter, a cozy patio with a good chair and a book is a great place to read. A tip? Keep those snacks coming!

4. What if I want to put my feet in the water and read?!

Find a pool that overlooks the beach. Set up your umbrella and chair near the water, and dip your feet in while you read. Bonus points if the cabana person knows your name! It’s the perfect way to enjoy a beach day and read at the same time.

Current Beach Reads on My Patio Table

I just finished "The Newcomer" by Mary Kay Andrews. This book is perfect for reading while at the beach! It takes place in a little beach town in Florida, with crime, mystery, murder, love, romance, and family bonding — all set against the backdrop of a beachy paradise. It’s fabulous! I couldn’t put it down. Well written, easy to read, and fun. Even though it has those crime and mystery elements, it’s written in a way that doesn’t leave you feeling overwhelmed by negativity.

I found myself rooting for all the characters, although I had some thoughts about Joe... If you’ve read it, let me know what you think!

Currently, I’m reading "Beach Read" by Emily Henry. The first page hooks you right away: “Only now, upon realizing you didn’t know what you wanted, you’re barreling down the highway in a mid-life-crisis-mobile with a suitcase full of cash and a man named Stan in your trunk.” I was immediately hooked — this is exactly the kind of wacky thing that could happen to me in my dreams!

Emily Henry’s writing is known for being laugh-out-loud funny, and this book is no exception. It’s “steamy, smart, and perceptive,” and I can’t wait to read more at the beach!

A romantic comedy where Sybil, left at the altar, embarks on a solo honeymoon to Hawaii, only to encounter her ex-fiancé and another former lover, leading to unexpected romantic developments. Set against the backdrop of Hawaii's beaches, the novel delves into themes of love, self-discovery, and healing.

I'm SOOO excited about this one- Comes out 6.24.25

YA memoir set in Fort Myers, Florida, intertwining the author's Filipino-American upbringing with a pivotal family incident involving a mango tree. The narrative offers a heartfelt exploration of identity, family, and the complexities of cultural heritage.

Really Great Stars! I am looking forward to diving into this one with my daughter.
