Book Review: The Shark By Mary Burton
This was my first Mary Burton read—and definitely not my last. This book had it all: gambling, mystery, murder, sex trafficking, romance, and yes… even a little sex. JACKPOT!
The characters were likable—not super deep, but just enough to make you care and root for them.
Riley, the main character, is a badass highway trooper with a search and rescue dog. The story kicks off with her trekking through miles of woods hunting down a sex trafficker. She runs A LOT. Honestly, it made me want to lace up my sneakers and hit the trail myself.
She’s also in the process of adopting a teenage girl she found on the streets. As a mom to a teenage daughter? Major props. Go get ’em, tiger.
Enter Clay Bowman: tall, dark, broody, and formerly Riley’s instructor. Oh, and they once had a one-night stand that ended in heartbreak. He’s back—whether to protect her, make amends, or both… you'll have to read to find out.
I loved this book for its straightforward storytelling and solid suspense. It keeps you guessing without being overly complicated, making it a perfect lazy Sunday read.
Hotness Scale?
Low-ish. There's a sex scene, but nothing to call your girlfriends about.
Till next time —
Happy Reading,
Marsha
Our Book Club isn’t just a group of women sitting around laughing...
Okay, fine—it is a lot of that.
But it’s also so much more.
For me, this space was created by my girlfriends at a time when I needed it most.
That’s the heart of sisterhood: showing up, sharing stories, and holding space for each other—sometimes with wine, sometimes with tears, always with love.
Join me each week for updates on what we’re reading and how it inevitably weaves itself into the chaos of my real life.
