Get a Life, Chloe Brown
By Talia Hibbert
In Get a Life, Chloe Brown, the main character, Chloe, has a near-death experience that causes her to stop and reflect. She wonders what her obituary might say—and realizes she hasn’t truly lived yet. That moment inspires her to create a list of things she wants to do, starting with moving out of her parents' house.
The book is well written, with some compelling themes. However, as a group of married women—many of us mothers—Chloe’s list felt a bit unrelatable. Her goals seemed simple, even juvenile, to us:
Move out
Go camping
Ride on a motorbike
Have meaningless sex
Travel the world with only a handbag
Most of us have already done some version of these things years ago, and unfortunately, it didn’t spark any strong memories or connections for me personally.
But… one part really stood out.
I loved the concept of writing a list of dreams, especially in connection to how we’d want to be remembered. It got me thinking—and I hope it does the same for you.
So, whether you read the book or not, consider this:
How do you want to be remembered?
Who do you want at your funeral?
What would be something truly special you’d love to hear said about you—or something meaningful you’d want your children to hear?
And a few deeper prompts:
If one stranger spoke at your funeral about how you impacted their life, who would that person be? What did you do for them?
If reality wasn’t a factor and you could do one thing, where would you go? What would you see, who would you meet, and what would you do?
In the book, Chloe meets someone who ends up being key in helping her fulfill her list. Are you someone who’s open to receiving help to reach your goals? Why or why not? Is there anyone you’d refuse help from? Why?
Chloe’s list wasn’t extravagant, but it was realistic —and that’s powerful. She also had medical challenges that kept her from living the way she wanted for much of her life. We all have our own limitations, but maybe, just maybe, being open to help is the first step toward turning more of our dreams into reality.
See 20 different waterfalls
Explore 20 caves
See the Mayan Ruins
Give a speech in front of a thousand people
Make a positive impact bigger than my own comprehension
Our Book Club isn’t just a group of women sitting around laughing...
Okay, fine—it is a lot of that.
But it’s also so much more.
For me, this space was created by my girlfriends at a time when I needed it most.
That’s the heart of sisterhood: showing up, sharing stories, and holding space for each other—sometimes with wine, sometimes with tears, always with love.
